For one of our portfolio ventures, we've recently transitioned from a custom UI library, designed several years ago, to more recent shadcn components.
Here are 5 key advantages we are seeing from this transition:
- Less boilerplate: Limited component writing from scratch, allowing to focus on higher-level tasks.
- Improved code generation: Better suited for AI-driven coding tools, speeding up development time.
- Faster onboarding: New devs can get up to speed faster in the codebase because of high standardization.
- Modern UI: Designed with accessibility and responsiveness in mind, making it easier to create UIs that work across devices.
- Better documentation: Built-in design documentation, so you don't have to maintain it yourself.
In summary, this refactoring effort was worthwhile to guarantee maximal engineering velocity for new features!
We're always open to share our transition approach and some learnings we've gathered along the way.
